HARRIE SMOLDERS STRIKES VICTORY FOR THE NETHERLANDS TWICE on Saturday 26 May

World No. 1 wins the Loro Piana Trophy at CSIO Rome - Masters d’Inzeo at Piazza di Siena, and later that same afternoon wins the Loro Piana Six-Bar with the 11- year old mare Corrada in the last round jumping the final fence at 1.95m.


ANOTHER VICTORY FOR ITALY
On Sunday 27 May


Lorenzo de Luca wins the Rolex Grand Prix marking the twelfth time for Italy to win both the Nations Cup and Grand Prix in the 86-year history of CSIO Rome.

The international horse show in Piazza di Siena ends with three spectacular performances by:

- The Lancieri of Montebello Regiment based in Rome
- The Carousel of the Villa Buon Respiro - San Raffaele Viterbo Musical Ride performed by disabled and non-disabled riders totally in harmony with their horses
- The Carousel of the 4th mounted Carabinieri Regiment.

GIRO D’ ITALIA
4 – 27 May 2018

The most important bicycle race in Italy, the Giro d'Italia, dates back to May 1909.
This year the Giro d’Italia started on 4 May 2018 in Jerusalem, and ended in Rome on 27 May. 

Chris Froome wins Giro d'Italia 2018 in Rome.  He is the first cyclist in 35 years to hold three grand tours at the same time and the first Brit to win the race.

FORMULA E RACING IN THE ETERNAL CITY

Rome’s first EPRIX made its debut in the EUR district on Saturday 14th April 2018 as the 18th city to host ABB FIA Formula E, the world’s first all-electric racing series. Circuto Cittadino dell’EUR, a challenging track of 2.84 km in length with a total of 21 turns, where the start/finish line was located on Via Cristoforo Colombo and where the cars were racing around the obelisk in Piazza Guglielmo Marconi. The race was won by the British Sam Bird of DS Virgin Racing.

The initiative was welcome by Virginia Raggi, the Mayor of Rome, who claimed “Rome is a key protagonist in the international landscape, with EUR setting the scene for the first Formula E race in Italy. The future means sustainable mobility, innovation and above all respect for the environment”.

In a crisp Rome, the Italian bagpipes band  welcome the Scottish team.

According to the Italian captain, the Scottish team is the strongest he has encountered in his long rugby career.

The match kicks off in a few minutes; hold your breath.

Italy is 3 - 0 up in the first 6 minutes.

Scotland strike back; score now 3 - 5 to Scotland, after a try from Frazer Brown and converted by Creig Laidlaw.

Tomasso Allan adds another 7 points in the 10th minute; when will it end?
Score  10 - 5  to Italia.


No; 17 - 5 (opportunity try from Matteo Minozzi for Italia).

Captain's try from Scotland; now 17 -12 to Italia.

In spite of a last minute surge from Italia, the score remains at 17 - 12 at half time.

Everyone is on the edge of their seats.

A 75 minute penalty kick gives Tommaso Allan the chance to win the match.

Tomasso ... converts to put Italia in the lead.....

In the last 2 minutes, Scotland are given a penalty kick.; Greig Laidlaw converts to give them a
 29 -27 last (penultimate) minute victory.

What a cliffhanger; excellent rugby from both sides.


2nd half break-out try from Negri

Score unchanged as try disallowed.

Tommaso Allan scores and converts 2 minuts later; score now: 24 - 12 to Italia.

In the final 20 minutes of play, intense pressure from Scotland leads to a converted try by Sean Maitland.

Score 24 -19 to Italia.

In the 71st minute Stuart Hogg levels the score; Greig Laidlaw converts to put Scotland in the lead.

Score 24 -26 to Scotland.

The lead changed twice during the final minutes as Tommaso Allan converted a penalty for Italy, and Greig Laidlaw saved the day for Scotland with a converted penalty

Final score:  27 - 29 to Scotland
